The celebration of consumerism along with presenting really good (and wearable) items is a theme that only Lagerfeld’s genius can present and still maintain the authority of the ”Chanel” name.Last time it was an art exhibition,now he places his clothes at a megastore, making it clear in semiotic terms that his clients will defnitely buy the outfits and perhaps wear them in the most inappropriate places,such as a Wal Mart.The satire went on with trainers being the focus point of the collection and pearls.The Chanel Fall collection was one of the few that worked in close analogy with the staging, the setting of a grand magasin, aka a supermarket of fashion,with models showcasing the next hot stuff to top the sales by people that worship the Chanel logo as itself.
“If you want to look really ridiculous, you go in stilettos in a supermarket.” noted Karl,explaining the idea of trainers worn along classic Chanel pieces such as the famous tweed jacket.No Hedi Slimane or Ricardo Tisci could even dream what Karl is actually doing-he’s definitely selling clothes as well as accessories (the latter being the focus point of this collection), while making fun of devoted Chanel followers. Don’t get me wrong,i didn’t like the majority of the outfits presented,with the most ”formal” one’s being an exception.But the key point wasn’t whether you like them or not,was whether you’ll buy them,regardless of taste,being a good brand follower. A sac poubelle becomes a sac plus belle in Lagerfeld’s world,making you thing that since fashion is being treated as a huge supermarket full of mega and micro trends,well,why not show it on the catwalk?Kudos to Mr Lagerfeld,once more.
