As being officially announced, Jeremy Scott will be the new creative director of Moschino SpA. The designeris expected to present his first collection for the 30-year-old Italian house during Milan Fashion Week in February next year, allowing him a thorough search and review of the Moschino archives that consist the brands unique dna.A spokesman from the House of Moschino presented the news while commenting that :”This appointment respects the DNA of the brand as Jeremy Scott represents not only an eclectic and contemporary communicator but most of all a designer capable of re-interpreting the identity and the essence of Moschino,” Somehow, though,i don’t feel that certain.Allow me to explain myself.
Until today,Rossella Jardini has been the person in charge at the House of Moschino since the death of its founder, Franco Moschino, in 1994. During that time, she has managed to keep the Moschino spirit and aesthetics alive, perhaps not in the most avant-garde way,but with a honest, decent approach.
Jeremy Scott takes on Moschino at a very crucial point, after the 30th anniversary collection where three decades of Moschino were celebrated in an exclusive new archive-inspired collection, which sees reissues of classic pieces.A very successful collection that showcased that the core idea of ”fashion fun” was alive and well in the fashion House that seemed ”never to take things seriously”,adding humor and clever sarcasm in its designs more often that any other brand .Trompe l’oeil, surrealism and the flag are Moschino’s iconic references that Jeremy Scott has to carefully study and recreate in a modern manner. Is he capable of doing so and keep his namesake line at the same time?He has indeed shown signs of an irreverent, unconventional behavior towards fashion and theoretically could fit well in the brand.Still, why do i feel there’s an ”Americanized” version of Moschino coming?
