The 2013 CFDA & Vogue Fashion Fund Event took place at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood with several celebrities such as Diane Kruger,Emmy Rossum and Victoria Beckham gracing the event.Anna Wintour played host and presented the judges for this years competition,in the likes of Reed Krakoff, J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons and Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken Downing. Its not an understatement that Los Angeles never managed to establish a reputation as a ”fashion capital” and now there is a huge effort from the CFDA to show they are taking it seriously.Based on the strategy of celebrities-fashion building-in-process connection, the city has managed to showcase some remarkable steps and present real talents such as Greg Chait, last year’s Vogue/Fashion Fund winner (creative director of the L.A.-based luxe boho cashmere brand Elder Statesman).Still i am not convinced that they take it seriously, even though Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy (also alumni of the fund), Chrome Hearts’ Laurie Stark, jewelry designer Irene Neuwirth, A.L.C designer Andrea Lieberman, shoe designer George Esquivel, stylist-turned-designer Rachel Zoe, Juicy Couture founders Pamela Skaist Levy and Gela Nash Taylor, Toms founder Blake Mycoskie, Gregory Parkinson and Jenni Kayne attended this years event, paying their attention to what was happening in the runway.
What is important though is to understand that fashion is mostly about clothes, not celebrity names.Good or even exceptionally good collections should have been the thing to be sought from designers that compete for the Fashion Fund prize.Mark Holgate, fashion news director at Vogue is convinced that ”L.A. is definitely having a fashion moment’‘.Still, when asked what unites the artists that presented their creative work at the CFDA event he adds:’‘What unites them is dedication, ambition and drive”.Interesting but leaving tradition out,you can;t expect much, plus building a solid couture tradition takes time and patience, something that American’s appear not keen of.
