FASHION INVASION OF THE COMIC BOOK HEROES
They have proclaimed their status and evolution in book or magazine format since the 1930’s with the inception of Famous Funnies. They are on this planet to leave a legacy and create more generations of devotees and worshippers. And Hollywood has also embraced this fascination with the supernatural characters by releasing films such as Iron Man, Transformers, Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc. based on the comic books.
Does this popularity bother me? absolutely not. The Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is currently holding a special exhibition entitled, Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy through September 1, 2008 with Giorgio Armani as honorary chair. The exhibition examines in depth the metaphorical association between fashion and the superhero. Within the exhibition halls, superhero costumes are juxtaposed with the fashions they have influenced, from the patriotic body of wonder woman to the mutant form of mystique to the post-modern body of ghost rider and so on.
The following are a few of the designers who contributed pieces to the exhibition: Armani; Dolce & Gabbana; Alexander McQueen; Versace; Balenciaga; Jean-Paul Gaultier. Production designer, Nathan Crowley, acted as creative consultant of the exhibition. His newest project, The Dark Knight premieres in a few weeks.
“The fashionable body and the superhero body are sites upon which we can project our fantasies, offering a virtuosic transcendence beyond the moribund and utilitarian.” - The Costume Institute.
